Car Air Gets Cleaner with Grape Seeds

Wish the air filter in your car worked better?

In the ever-competitive world of the auto industry, engineers once again look to mother nature for advancements. Engineers at Nissan Japan have developed a new type of high-performance cabin air filter . This new filter has added anti-allergenic properties due to the fact that each fiber is impregnated with polyphenols derived from good old-fashioned grape seeds.

Common cabin air filters are capable of filtering out dust and allergens down to 10 microns. With this new additive, Nissan vehicles will be able to filter particulate down to .3 microns, which include everything from dust mites to diesel soot. In addition to the polyphenols, the fibers in this new type of filter also carries electric charges, which also help trap very small particles. Nissan claims that 15 minutes of running your AC system on re-circulate can eliminate up to 99.5% of the allergens in your car's cabin.

This isn't just a lofty piece of R&D that's for concept cars either. Nissan is including these filters in all of their compact cars coming off the assembly line by the end of the year. Unfortunately, it will only be installed in vehicles manufactured for the Japanese market. It's unclear when these filters will hit US soil but those who want cleaner air in their cars should be on the lookout for them.
