Looolo Textiles, Sustainable yet Chic

In 2003, Joanna Notkin launched a beautiful line of clean, chic and luxuriant textiles Looolo . The name is a visual representation of "100%", symbolizing the company's commitment to every aspect of the design process- from making the choice to use organic materials for production to consideration of the environmental footprint the products leave at the end of their useful lives.

Since the textile industry is one of the largest known environmental polluters, the people at Looolo wanted to address this in order to affect global change. All products are lined with organic cotton and filled with kapok from the rainforest in Malaysia.

Organic cotton means that meaning no artificial pesticides or insecticides were used to grow it, and the dyes used are completely chemical-free. The kapok used is sustainably harvested in Malaysia.

Now reading about "sustainable textiles" my mind could only conjure up images of hemp and itchy burlap. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw luxurious and well designed furnishings, cushions, blankets, scarves etc. from Looolo. Hand and machine knit, the range is available in an array of rich colors, an example of "sustainable chic." Looolo manages to successfully use eco-friendly materials without sacrificing contemporary design aesthetic. It does so in the true spirit of “cradle-to-cradle” design, the textiles are completely compostable and biodegradable.
