Just what you were looking forward to! Another reality show... this one with dogs and their owners. Professionally and home-trained dogs will compete against each other for the title of the Greatest American Dog in CBS's summer line-up of new reality shows.
Casting calls for dogs and owners were open to any form of dog talent. Thus, show dogs, agility dogs, talking dogs, hunters, obedience dogs, and musical dogs were all invited to the calls. AKC breeds and mutts were all welcome. With such a wide casting call for the Greatest American Dog (the second working title), no telling what dog talents the first few shows have lined up!
The dogs and owners selected to appear on the Greatest American Dog will live together for the duration of the show (or until eliminated). They will compete against each other in a variety of training challenges, provided by the show, that will focus on the abilities of the trainer to ready the dog for each competition.
The Greatest American Dog, or a similarly named show, will debut on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT. The winner will get $250,000 to blow on steak, bones, and squeaky toys!
That's the buzz for today!

Dogs jumping in harness
Submitted on August 27th, 2008 by AnonymousI think that competion with the dogs jumping from the platform in a harness was abusive! Harnesses were meant for saving lives, not for FUN! There are so many injuries that occur when you actually have to use a saftey harnesss! I think Galaxy got hurt by doing such! Whoever decided that a dog should have to do this is not a dog LOVER! It is CRUELTY to animals!!! Knowing what I know about saftey harnesses, you should be very ashamed!!! I also think STAR is the world's greatest dog because she would not jump! She is too smart! Although I am sure if Bill's life were endangered she would jump without a harness to protect and save him!!! I will not be watching anymore of this dog abuse and the judges should be equally ashamed for not stoping this cruelty of dogs!!! SHAME ON YOU ALLL!!!!
YOUR SHOW IS CRUELTY TO DOGS!

DOGS JUMPING IN HARNESS
Submitted on September 6th, 2008 by AnonymousI couldn't agree more. I also believe that MANY of the activities that these poor dogs are subjected to are cruel. What dog should be made to sit still while an elephant charges at it? Or to sit on a tree stump for all eternity? Those judges who think they know so much and DARE to insinuate that the owners display poor judgement should think twice; I think they are nuts. Anyway, I'm quite sure that any dog who is evicted from canine academy can't be anything but terribly RELIEVED that all the stress and strain is over. I'm not even a dog lover, but this seems like the height of cruelty to one's pet - all in the name of "loyalty." SHEESH!
The Real Winner was STAR
Submitted on September 24th, 2008 by AnonymousI agree some what about the cruelty but what I don't get is the judges. Like Star with the puppies guiding them though the maze to the end, the judge said that Bill pushed Star over her limit. But at the course where Star had to jump from the plate form with the harness, Bill did not push Star over the limit and the judges punished him for that. Bill was just remembering what the judges told him from before on not push Star over the limit and he followed though. When he saw that Star was not going to jump he called it, he was not going to make her jump. Good for Star and Good for Bill! Bad Judges.
