Boeing has been at the forefront of aeronautical design for a long time. So it comes as no suprise that they just tested the first ever fuel cell powered aircraft. Boeing says this is just the beginning.

The platform they used for the test flight was a modified two-seat Dimona motor-glider. They equipped a small electric motor and routed the power to a traditional front mounted propeller. The flight reached a maximum altitude of 3,300 ft. and was able to maintain flight for 20 minutes before returning to earth.

After reaching the maximum altitude, the pilot was able to switch over to Hydrogen power only and was able to achieve a cruising speed of about 62mph. Intelligent Energy of Europe and Gore of Germany were on had for the test flight as they had assisted developing the fuel cell and battery as well as in constructing the aircraft.

Although it will take years before the same technology will be the primary power source for jumbo jets, the success is still a step in the right direction. Bravo Boeing.
